This piece started out with a photograph, taken through a dirty window showing a full moon over the sea. "At the start of lockdown we were all experiencing our worlds shrinking to the size of our homes and what could be seen from our windows, and having access to this view was something to be celebrated. The way the moonlight picked out the grime on this window and turned it into something beautiful seemed like something worth noticing too."
The first contributing artist to receive this responded to the dreamy, silvery nature of the photograph - and created a 'Window to My World' looking inward instead of out. They worked on fabric with a variety of silvers, sequins, beads and lace - drawing out the magical treasure trove elements from the original picture, and covering the photograph with this cloth so that the edges could still be seen around the scalloped fabric.
The next artist to receive this work wanted to bring the two elements together into a unified whole and so cut into the edges of the photo, mirroring the roundness of the sequins and beads, and moon and street lamp glow. They then collaged onto the cloth and over the edges onto the photograph using old prints and negative space.
The last artist to respond to this piece saw a lot of joy in this piece and wanted to bring some brightness into the muted tones. Echoing the previous contribution by cutting away and collaging on top, finding repeating patterns and shapes, the addition of bright colour brings out the warmth in the the sequins and stitching. This artist also separated the two layers out again, bringing back a sense of what's hidden and revealed into the object as a whole.
