Sheet Music Artwork Materials: paper, photocopy, card, coloured pencil, ink
The initial image was a piece of sheet music mounted on cantaloupe-coloured card.
The next artist was at first keen to discover how the music sounded but they then realised that they wanted to retain the promise of the music – hoping that it might sound celebratory and that discovering the actual sounds could undermine this.
Inspired to retain the idea of celebration, they drew beautiful fireworks in coloured pencil overlaid on the musical notation.
The next artist was keen to learn more about the music, but again chose not to listen or play the piece itself. Instead they discovered some illustrations from the play that the music is from, the theme of which relates to the Bayeux Tapestry.
They redrew two illustrations from this into the corners of the artwork. The illustrations depict two women sewing the tapestry, looking almost like they are in ballet dancing poses – a link that with the artist's experience during lockdown as they had taken up ballet dancing via zoom.
The final piece brought together the themes of celebration, the Bayeux Tapestry and dance by adding text, additional figures, colour and musical notation.
